Endophthalmitis is a condition when there is severe inflammation of tissues in the eye. Inflammation typically is caused by infection from bacteria or fungi or mostly commonly after penetration of the eye from trauma or eye surgery.
Symptoms of Endophthalmitis
Endophthalmitis symptoms include a decline of vision, pain and increased redness or swelling. If these symptoms are presented after surgery, you should contact your doctor immediately. Endophthalmitis typically develops two to five days after major eye surgery.
Diagnosing and Treating Endophthalmitis
Patients that are showing symptoms should undergo a regular eye exam. Additional exams may also be necessary. Prompt diagnosis of Endophthalmitis is important and can be treated with antibiotic eye drops, oral antibiotics and sometimes steroids. In severe cases additional surgery maybe be needed.
